Discover what outreach for our community to spread STEM and the FIRST message.
Our team has done our best to spread FIRST and STEM, especially now during the pandemic. One of our members is a part of JROTC, and decided to make, and mentor a team made up of JROTC members. Not only did he get funding from the program, he gathered many student’s interests! Please take a look at what the Batallion Bots are doing in the images below!
Our team also tries to go to elementary schools to get kids excited about FIRST. We have gone to classrooms and introduced them to our robot (and a 3D printed Baby Yoda)! Then we challenged them to make a bridge out of paper. While we went there to inspire them, they actually inspired us! Their bridge designs were creative and effective. Some used paper as a kind of rope, making their own kind of suspension bridge. Others effectively stacked paper to create stronger materials, or made arches with the paper for added support. They did all this while working together. These are certainly the minds of not only future scientists and engineers, but also creative thinkers and problem solvers. We also went to a school’s science fair, where we set up shop in their gym. The kids could come up and try to drive our robot, and pick up a block like we did in SKYSTONE. Many kids kept coming back for more, assuring us that they would give up their turn in “just a minute”! We hope these kids will think back fondly on this experience as they choose what to do in their academic careers.
